I lived in Kazakhstan in 2001. Here are some pics from then.
Sorry for the horrible quality. The originals are in storage somewhere and these scans I have are really, really bad (and small). But they’ll convey the gist of what it was like living in Almaty, Kazakhstan. And I think a few of these are actually scans of postcards…

Almaty. I don’t remember what that yellow building is. The green hill with the tower on it is a famous local landmark. The mountains in the background rise to 16,000 feet.

Camels on the street in winter.

Almaty’s main mosque.

Going up Shymbulak ski resort in the summer.

The big museum in Almaty.

An average street.

The main square and some government building.

Me at my ghetto desk in our little apartment.

Camping in Chris’s backyard.

Our church group singing outside.

Tommy and Chris sleeping on the floor of Chris’s sauna.

A Russian orthodox church.

The bathroom in our apartment.

Me at Talgar Pass (3200m) on May 1, 2001.

Me and mom. The sign says “Dangerous Zone”.

15-year-old me at our kitchen table.

Our apartment building.

Me at Talgar Pass.

In the main square during the Kazakh new year holiday of Nauryz. Everyone was gathered around to hear the president of Kazakhstan speak.

At the Nauryz celebration.

Me on my “bed.”

Zenkov Cathedral in Panfilov Park.

Looking toward the presidential palace.
